Back in Y2K, while in Hong Kong, I met a remarkable guy of Indian descent who managed a Gold's Gym near one of the busiest MTR stations in the city. He taught me a game-changing shaving technique and explained that a man's shaving method should change before and after marriage. More than 25 years later, I still find myself wondering about that advice.
His unique English and sense of humour made him unforgettable. At one gathering, he greeted someone with, "Oh hi [name], where are you off to?" She replied, "I was coming to see you," despite clearly heading for the restroom. Moments like that perfectly captured his blend of culture, confidence, and humour.
As for the shaving advice itself, I've never encountered a widely recognized cultural tradition that says men should literally shave in one direction before marriage and another after marriage. It may have been:
A personal grooming theory.
A family tradition.
Advice related to beard growth, skin care, or appearance for married men.
