Keeping Durian Warm Through Winter: Is the Soil or Air More Important?
Growing durians in a cold climate such as NSW presents one major challenge: the durian doesn't understand that you're trying to help it.
You can put a young durian inside a greenhouse, enclosed growing room or protected structure, but if the winter nights become too cold, the tree can still go into shock.
One of the first things you may notice is the leaves beginning to droop, yellow, brown or simply fall away.
So, when protecting a durian from cold, is it more important to warm the air or the soil?
The short answer: both matter, but warm roots are critical
Think of the roots as the engine of the tree.
The roots supply the rest of the durian with water and nutrients. When the root zone becomes cold, root activity slows considerably. The soil may contain plenty of moisture, but the roots are no longer working efficiently enough to supply the tree as they would under warm tropical conditions.
This can create a situation where the tree behaves almost as though it is suffering from water stress.
The foliage is still losing moisture, but the cold roots aren't keeping up with the demand.
That is one reason a durian can look perfectly healthy one day and then begin dropping leaves after a run of cold nights.
Warm roots keep the tree's basic machinery functioning.
But don't ignore the air
Keeping the soil warm doesn't mean the air temperature doesn't matter.
The leaves themselves are tropical leaves. They are adapted to warm conditions, and cold air can slow their metabolism and photosynthesis.
If the room becomes very cold overnight, the foliage can still suffer even if the root ball is warm.
So the best approach isn't simply to heat the soil and forget about the rest.
Think of the tree as having two temperature zones:
- The root zone — keep this comfortably warm.
- The canopy — prevent it from becoming excessively cold.
You don't necessarily need to turn your growing room into a tropical rainforest in the middle of a NSW winter. What you want to do is prevent the tree from experiencing prolonged cold that causes it to shut down.
Why do the leaves fall?
When a durian experiences significant cold stress, several things happen at once.
- Photosynthesis slows down.
- Root activity decreases.
- Water and nutrient uptake becomes less efficient.
- The tree begins conserving energy.
If the stress continues, the tree can activate a natural process called leaf abscission, where a separation layer forms at the base of the leaf.
Eventually, the leaf drops.
This can look alarming, but leaf loss does not automatically mean the tree is dead.
The tree may simply be protecting itself and reducing the amount of foliage it has to maintain while conditions are unsuitable.
The problem is that repeated or severe cold stress can weaken a young tree considerably.
What temperatures should we be thinking about?
There isn't one magic temperature at which every durian suddenly becomes damaged. The duration of the cold, the condition of the tree, humidity, root temperature and previous acclimation all make a difference.
As a practical guide for a young durian:

These aren't hard biological boundaries. They are practical growing guidelines.
And importantly, eight hours at a cold temperature is very different from briefly touching that temperature for a few minutes.
This is why winter nights can be such a problem.
The root zone may be the best place to spend your heating dollars
If you're trying to grow durian in NSW, electricity becomes part of the equation.
Heating an entire room continuously can become expensive very quickly.
Instead, there is an interesting opportunity: heat the root zone directly.
A well-insulated container with controlled root-zone heating can keep the roots substantially warmer than the surrounding environment.
You can then maintain the air at a reasonable temperature rather than attempting to heat the entire space to tropical conditions.
For example, a grower might aim to keep the root zone around 18°C or above, while preventing the surrounding air from dropping into the severe cold-stress range overnight.
The exact temperatures will depend on the tree and growing system, but the principle is simple:
Keep the roots working and don't let the canopy get hammered by cold.
Insulation is just as important as heating
There is another lesson here that is easy to overlook.
The cheapest heat is the heat you don't lose.
If you're trying to maintain a durian through winter, insulating the container and protecting the growing area can be just as valuable as adding more heating power.
Insulating the root container reduces heat loss from the growing medium.
Protecting the growing space reduces heat loss to the outside.
Reducing drafts prevents cold air from continuously stripping heat away from the leaves.
This means a relatively modest heating system can sometimes accomplish much more than a large heater operating in a poorly insulated space.
A practical winter strategy
For a young durian in a cold NSW location, the goal isn't necessarily to reproduce the tropics perfectly.
The goal is to prevent the tree from entering severe cold stress.
A practical strategy is:
1. Protect the tree from cold night air
Keep it inside an enclosed growing area rather than allowing winter night temperatures to reach the foliage directly.
2. Keep the root zone warm
Use root-zone heating where appropriate and insulate the container so the heat isn't simply lost to the surrounding environment.
3. Maintain reasonable air temperature
The foliage still needs protection. Don't assume warm roots will completely compensate for very cold air.
4. Heat mainly when it matters
If the biggest problem is the period from evening through until dawn, there may be little reason to spend large amounts of electricity heating the space during the warmest part of the day.
5. Watch the minimum temperature
A room reaching 22°C during the afternoon tells you very little if it falls to 9°C every night.
The overnight minimum can be the number that determines whether your durian keeps its leaves.
The important lesson
Growing durian outside its natural tropical environment isn't necessarily about forcing the tree to grow rapidly all winter.
Sometimes the objective is much simpler:
Keep the tree alive, keep the roots functioning, protect the leaves and get it through the coldest part of the year.
Once warm weather returns, the tree can begin growing properly again.
And that changes the way we should think about winter heating.
Rather than asking:
"How do I heat this whole room like the tropics?"
The better question may be:
"How do I stop this durian from becoming cold enough to go into shock?"
That is a much more achievable goal.
With good insulation, sensible root-zone heating and protection from the coldest overnight air, even growers in NSW can give a tropical durian a much better chance of getting through winter without sacrificing its entire canopy.
The roots are the engine. The leaves are the solar panels. In winter, keep the engine warm and don't let the solar panels freeze.
